[...] Usually when I see a new post come across the News Reader from the “BBC Staff” RSS feed, Its about the BBC’s use of XMPP to create unique notifcations of current programmes on various radio stations. Not about Cherry Cheesecake (Although, It is a nice change for once and does sound to be quite a good cheesecake.) Get your cheesecake fix here. [...]

Absolutely, that's the message to those inclined to find reality an inconvenience. But the IA tendency is often a little far in the other direction.

I've seen designers (stubbornly it seemed at first) pursuing things they were told couldn't be done, finally winning the argument and getting a better user experience as a result. Many constraints in organisations are also not based on reality, but accepted wisdom of how things are/what can't be done.

It's also worth saying that being aware of the constraints etc. doesn't necessarily also always mean saying no, or indeed being 'uncreative'. Often, the 'unshackled' ideas are so beyond reality that they're actually not really that new, insightful or creative.

I'd argue that being aware of constraints, of what is possible, actually can then enable us to imagine even more creative things. Things which can actually be built, because they're based on reality, but things which combine previously separate things in new ways.

Obviously all just my opinion, though ;-)

Thank you for posting this invaluable information. It's an uphill battle getting that first job. While it'll never be a cakewalk, pointers like these can make things a tad smoother. :)

I was working in a public library when the No Asshole Rule first came out... we were also working with somebody who could've been inspiration for the book too. Needless to say the book got passed around the employees of the library before the patrons got a chance to check it out.

My manager at the time had a difficult job trying to deal with this problem employee while trying to run the library. Since then it's always amazed me how one person can cost so much time, money, and emotional energy... and that was just in a branch of about 8 employees.
